Featured Blog: Illinois Campers -That's How We Roll
illinoiscampers.blogspot.com
I have been reading so many great blogs from people who
RV, camp, fulltime or do the weekend thing like we do. I thought I
would try my hand at telling our story and give an accounting of our
experiences as we begin our camping/RV lifestyle. We talked for
years about getting a camper and enjoying the great outdoors in a
little more style than in a tent(Glenda just won't do that). So we
went to the Chicago RV show last February in Rosemont, IL and saw
just about every type of camper, RV, trailer, toy hauler at the
show. We didn't want to spend alot of money(I know that is a
relative term) so we decided to go with a small hybrid trailer from
Starcraft. We purchased it in July and had a hitch put on our 2006
Mitsubishi Outlander(towing capacity 3500lbs) and off we went from
the dealer.
Upgrade your RV Theater Entertainment Center
Tim R. Enright
When we bought our RV we had no idea what the sound system
sounded like until we actually went camping for the first time.
Since dealers typically have no power hooked up on the RV units
you are looking at, you have no idea how the electrical
components perform until you get them home and plug them in.
Our Jayco 5th Wheel originally came with a Memorex Model STS71E
125 Watt Home Theater. We were pleasantly surprised by how good
it sounded.
One day the fan in the back of the unit started getting loud so
I had it replaced at a Jayco Dealer under our RV warranty. The
replacement unit looked identical, yet my original remote would
not work. Upon further inspection I discovered that the receiver
had different components inside. I needed to return to the
dealer to get the new remote for the receiver. On top of
everything else the sound of the new one was nowhere near as
good as the original one.
We decided to upgrade. I did some research and found the
speakers installed in our RV were model LS3CMW, 90 watt ceiling
mount speakers made by Magnadyne. The subwoofer was a passive
type speaker. A passive speaker has no amplifier and gets its
power only from the receiver.
I went to work looking for a new
Home Theater-in-a-Box. The new system would need a DVD
player, Radio and inputs for TV. It would be nice to have an
iPod dock. Eventually I would also add my WDTV so we could watch
our TiVo shows from home.
Some things that limited my selection while shopping were output
power and types of speakers. I was keeping the original speakers
so I didn’t want a receiver that would provide enough power to
damage them. The subwoofer had to be a passive type because the
location of the speaker had no AC outlet. I was also limited by
the size of the receiver that would fit back into our RV
cabinet.
We eventually ended up purchasing a LG model
LHT754 theater system. This model has proven to be an
excellent addition to our RV. The performance and sound rivals
our larger more expensive system at home. We are quite happy
with our selection. If we were to upgrade again I would go with
a Blu-ray model like the LG model
LHB336. There are plenty of other
Home Theater-in-a-Box units to choose from as well.
The final entry to our RV Theater Entertainment System was a
Harmony Remote Control. The Harmony is the perfect companion
to our setup. It allows us to control every component in our
system with ease.

Featured Product: Hookup Memory Level
This item may be one of the smallest gadgets we ever purchased for
or RV. It is also however one of the handiest. If you own a 5th
Wheel trailer you know how much fun it can be to keep getting in and
out of your truck to run back and adjust the front landing jacks on
your RV to the proper height while hitching up. With this little
Hookup Memory Level you can set the height of the trailer with a
sliding marker to remember where it was when you unhooked from it.
This way you just need to return the bubble on the level to this
mark when you go to hook it back up. Isn’t this just the simplest,
yet greatest little device! If you are a 5th Wheel owner then this
is a must have gadget.
